Oh joyous, joyous day! Tonight the NFL kicks off their season and millions rejoice. It feels like we’ve been waiting years rather than months for the start of the season but we no longer have to wait with the Giants taking on the Cowboys at home.

It’s official. The NFL hands down its punishments to the Saints which includes Sean Payton being suspended for the entire 2012 season without pay (I hope he was saving), a $500k fine (which oddly enough didn’t seem like a lot…don’t they fine that much for a hit?), and they took away their second round draft picks for the next two years. The team’s former defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams, is banned indefinitely.
Yikes. They were clearly trying to send a message with all that.

After a few issues halted the trade earlier today, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Tim Tebow trade to the Jets for 3 pennies and a pizza is complete.

Peyton Manning officially signs with the Broncos, making John Elway’s feelings about Tim Tebow crystal clear. All last season you knew he wasn’t crazy about Tebow. But with Tebowmania going absolutely out of control, Elway had no choice but to stick with him regardless of his feelings. With Peyton available, it offered Elway the ONLY way to get away from Tebowmania and all its trappings. At the end of the day you have to make the best decision for your team. Even if it means taking a huge risk on an aging QB with four neck surgeries.  It’s still Peyton Manning. And it might actually work out…sometimes you just have to go for it.

Sources say that Colts owner Jim Irsay and Peyton Manning will part ways after 14 seasons today at a press conference scheduled for noon.
After months of speculation it seems that this decision was a long time coming. Would the young quarter back the Colts are set to draft benefit from being around Manning? Maybe. However, with everything that’s happened it seems that this might be the best decision for both parties.
Manning wants to keep playing and I’m sure a number of teams will be fighting for him. It will be an interesting few days for sure. After multiple neck injuries I can’t help but think that maybe retiring would be a better option. He’d make an excellent commentator/analyst and it’s infinitely safer for his neck.
