Sorry, Frank Haith, I’m Not Convinced

Frank Haith

Frank Haith, coach of the #4 in the nation University of Missouri, is having a great season. With only two losses this season everyone is talking about the wonderful job he’s done at Missouri. I, however, am not a believer.

As a University of Miami alum I had the pleasure of watching Frank’s tenure for 7 seasons at the U. I remember he was brought on due to his experience in the ACC as an assistant at Wake Forest. That experience in the ACC will help him recruit I was told. So, I watched and I waited for this recruiting brilliance to take us to the top. Yea, well I’m still waiting in 7 seasons we only made the tournament once and sure we had some winning seasons but we were mediocre at best.

Now, Frank’s at Missouri, he’s winning and he’s on top of the world. However, being from the U, I’ve seen this happen before. Exhibit A: former University of Miami football coach Larry Coker. Dear old Larry came to the U in 2001, right after Butch Davis. Larry won the National Championship in his first season, was robbed in his second season then things got a little shaky. See, Larry was winning with the amazing players that Butch Davis had recruited. Once it was his turn to recruit and build that winning team things went to hell in a hand basket. This is what I foresee for Frank Haith. He currently has six seniors on his team who have been to the tourney the past three seasons. This isn’t some random team in need of rebuilding. This is a team that has been around the block.

What happens when it’s time for him to recruit? Will it be a Larry Coker situation all over again? Or will he prove me wrong and continue to have success at Mizzou?
